Dr Rock and The Famous Merengo est né à l’initiative de Niko Gorodetzky (musicien et urgentiste). Dans les années 70, Niko a fait partie du groupe toulousain Peche Melba qui fit des apparitions remarquées au Golf Drouot (2e du Tremplin 1973).

Puis en 1977, il fonda Weekend Millionnaire (WEA) avec Navarre et Thomas pour ce qui fera un succès des groupes d’influences west coast à cette époque (Compilation Integrale & More/ CD chez Yanat production).

Au début des années 90, Niko et Jean Michel Navarre créèrent un groupe de reprises/adaptations de standards west coast : Season (Cd chez Yanat) habitué du Backstage, scène rock parisienne.

Dr Rock est le surnom donné par les journaux rock des années 80 car il fut le premier urgentiste à jeter les bases des couvertures médicales de masses dans les méga-concerts, jusqu’à nos jours The Famous Mérengo est une allusion au titre Haitan Divorce de Steely Dan.

Tout est vintage dans cet album, la musique, la pochette (un clin d’œil à Edward Hopper) et même L’artiste !

Homme engagé de nationalité Béninoise, auteur, compositeur, interprète, un des représentants du continent Africain, Assoh Babylas mène son combat à travers ses compositions. Son Roots Reggae Africain dénonce avec force les dérives des dirigeants africains et européens. Cette musique contestataire est depuis toujours l’expression du peuple, de ses maux, de ses souffrances. Il chante le désir d’unité et de fraternité entre les nations. Il défend ses valeurs avec ferveur.

L’année de ses 20 ans, il quitte le Bénin et se rend à Lomé au Togo. Il y fonde son premier groupe, les ‘Happyness’. Ce sera sa première expérience musicale à l’étranger. Vient ensuite la Côte d’Ivoire. Il passe plusieurs années à Abidjan où les rencontres qui jalonnent son parcours l’enrichissent considérablement, comme Ismaël Isaac, Tiken Jah Fakoly, Alpha Blondy. Globe-trotter, il part jouer en Hollande, en Italie puis en France où il choisit de s’installer à Saint-Étienne dès 2002, et forme son groupe les ‘Kinikinis Wéwés’.

2006 sera couronnée par la sortie de son 1er album “LA MORT DES JUSTES”. Au service du texte, sans concession, il traite de sujets forts dont la chanson ‘Africa’ dédiée à la condition des femmes, où qu’elles soient dans le monde. Cet opus permet de prendre la pleine mesure de cette voix pure, limpide, fluide, incomparable, inimitable. Ce timbre de voix transporte instantanément les émotions les plus fortes au plus profond de nos âmes. Si ses chansons ne sont pas révolutionnaires, elles restent néanmoins d’une efficacité absolue.

2013 Assoh Babylas a su embarquer du beau monde dans son ‘taxi’ pour réaliser son album “TAXIMAN”. Avec toute sa richesse, nul ne doute, son répertoire continuera de nous émouvoir, de nous émerveiller et surtout de réveiller nos consciences. Assoh Babylas is a song writer, a music composer, a singer, and above all a militant man. He is a representative of the African continent, and leads his fight through his compositions. He sings his desire for union and fraternity between nations and defends his values with great passion. His African Roots reggae denounces the abuses of African and European leaders. This protest music has always been an expression of the people, of their pain and suffering.

Assoh Babylas started singing when he was very young in a band called the HAPPINESS in Lomé, Togo. He then moved to Côte d’Ivoire, where he spent several years in Abidjan, meeting many people who greatly enriched his life : Ismaël Isaac, Tiken Jah Fakoly, Alpha Blondy. As a globetrotter, Assoh Babylas played in Nederland, Switzerland, Germany, Italy and France, where he decided to settle in Saint-Etienne in 2002, forming his group ‘Kinikinis Wéwés’.

2006 saw the release of his 11-track album, LA MORT DES JUSTES (THE DEATH OF THE RIGHTEOUS), a homogeneous set of songs with a resolutely Roots-based music. Its uncompromising lyrics deal with powerful subjects, including the song ‘Africa’, dedicated to the condition of women, wherever they may be in the world. The lyrics condemn the excesses of European and African leaders and insist on the necessity for the African countries to unite.

Since the connection between bands in Saint-Etienne is a tradition, the song “BLACK AND WHITE” features DUB INCORPORATION. Thanks to this album we realize the full extent of the purity, the limpidity, and the fluidity of Assoh Babylas’ incomparable and inimitable voice which allows the strongest emotions to get straight to the bottom of our souls.

Released in May 2013, Assoh Babylas’ second album TAXIMAN is made of 15 colorful tracks featuring famous musicians such as TIKEN JAH FAKOLY’s brass section and backing vocals, KUBIX, members of DUB INC, DATUNE or even JAH GAÏA. The album also features ISMAËL ISAAC on “BROTHER’S SONG” and the American ANDREW DIAMMOND on “KINGS OF ABOMEY.” “TAXIMAN” raises questions about Africa’s critical situation where only the decision-makers are lining their pockets as it is exposed in the song “LE CERCLE DE FEU.” In the song “LUNUMBA”, Assoh Babylas tackles the issue of the assassination of one of the symbols of the fight for independence in Belgian Congo. In “IVOIRITÉ” and “ELLES”, he demonstrates real empathy for the Ivorian people and for the African women who are unscrupulously promised the European Eldorado. Assoh Babylas also widens his field of vision by questioning himself about hostage-takings around the world in “OTAGES” and the Arab Spring in “RENDEZ-VOUS.” TAXIMAN is a journey full of touching, colorful rhythms and melodies which will not fail to move you. Even if his songs are not revolutionary, they remain extremely powerful. Assoh Babylas’ repertoire is so rich that it will continue to touch us deeply, to amaze us and most importantly to awaken our consciences.

Au fil des années, la musique d’Assoh Babylas devient de plus en plus sophistiquée et aboutie. Tout en conservant son identité unique, il ne cesse de surprendre son public. Après ses albums à succès « La Mort Des Justes » et « TAXIMAN » il revient avec un nouvel album « A L’ECOLE DE BABYLONE » enregistré en France avec des musiciens de renom. Un album Roots Reggae,sur des faits, des réalités d’aujourd’hui et les inégalités dans le monde. Mais aussi un clin d’œil à l’amour.
